Olympus Introduces New Camera, We Think

1875

Olympus has introduced the new E-PL7, the latest mid-level rangefinder style Micro Four-Thirds camera from Olympus, succeeding the E-PL6 and E-PL5 that came before it and nestling between the E-PM entry level line of cameras (E-PM1 and E-PM2) and the E-P{blank} more advanced line of cameras (E-P1…E-P5, and beyond! We think).

The new E-PL7 bears a striking resemblance to the E-P5. So striking that we forget which one is which. We think it’s the bottom. [Photo: Imaging-Resource.com]

All E-Px cameras (M, L, and …{blank}) feature soap bar shapes with a hole on the front for the lens, a screen on the back to look at things, and a variety of buttons and dials along the top and rear.

Here’s a good comparison of the new E-PL7 (top) to the suddenly crappy E-PL5 (bottom) from our friends at Imaging-Resource.com. Oh wait, the E-PL7 is on the bottom. We think.

The new E-PL7 features key improvements over its E-PL predecessors and E-PM cameras while lacking some key features of the top of the line E-P{blank}5. We think, but we confess that we are a little confused since 7 is a bigger number than 5. But since the E-P{blank} line is above the E-PM line. Oh, wait, we mean E-PL. But E-P{blank} is above E-P….wait, we’ll get this right…above E-PM (yes!) too.

The changes between the E-PL7 (top) and E-PL5 (bottom) are profound. Just look, they’re different colors! Photo courtesy Imaging-Resource.com again.

The E-PL7 is more megapicklier than its predecessors and the lower level E-PMx line while less megapicklier than the E-P{blank}x line. Oh wait, that’s not true. They all have the same number of megapickles. The big news is that the E-PL7 has a rear touchscreen. Oh wait, they all have that. No, the big news is that the E-PL7 has WiFi. Oh wait, the E-P5 has that. It must be better WiFi though, since it’s the top of the line model. The big news it that the E-PL7’s screen can be tilted and flipped. Sure, some might say that the E-PL6 did that too, but the E-PL7’s screen does it THE OTHER WAY ROUND!

But wait, there’s more–the E-PL7 now has the word “PEN” on it. Score!

The revolutionary E-PL7 (top, no wait, bottom) is clearly different (read: lighter color) than the E-PL6 (or is that an E-P5. No wait, E-PL5) that came before it. When asked if the similar styles, similar names, and similar features causes confusion among consumers, Olympus said, “You know that kid down the street that plays Pokemon and can tell you the difference between Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle and can show how to use Energy cards in battle? And if you feign even the slightest interest, he’ll spend the next thirty minutes talking your ear off about the subtle yet significant difference between all of the cards at a level that is critically important to his world but utterly useless to yours? Well, he’s our PEN product manager now, and he wants to make sure that every question like, ‘hey Uncle Bob, I’m looking to get a camera and was looking at the Olympus PENS. Can you tell me anything about them?’ lasts at least thirty minutes.”

The new, awesome* E-PL7! * More awesome than the E-PM line but less awesome than the E-P{blank} line, unless of course we're talking about one of the older E-P{blanks} which the E-PL7 is most definitely more awesome than. Because it's new.

  1. And it takes selfies! You forgot their main selling point! IT TAKES BETTER SELFIES THAN ANYTHING IN THE WORLD. The screen flips UNDER the camera instead of ABOVE the camera, making it naturally much more betterer for selfies!!!

  2. Wow I have to get one of these! Oh wait there’s one in my bag – no, that’s a Q.
Well, I have to get something, my pictures aren’t getting any better by themselves.
